FROM THE DESK OF LEE CANNING

Get away from the colder weather by joining us in our warm and delightfully friendly cafe and lounge at the Senior Center. Please come and relax with your friends in comfort unaffected by the weather outside.

PREPARE FOR STORMS Listen to local radio stations or weather forecasts on the television.

1. Have flashlights handy with a supply of batteries. Candles can be a fire hazard.
2. Adjust refrigerators and freezers to their coldest settings so food will last longer. (Remember to reset after the storm warning passes.)
3. Fill clean containers with water for cooking, washing, and flushing your toilet in case your water supply is affected by a power outage.
4. Shut down and unplug all electronic equipment – computer, television, stereo system.
5. If you lose power it’s best to disconnect any motor-driven appliances such as refrigerators, air conditioners, or humidifiers; if it’s possible to do so. Better yet, install surge protectors, available from CL&P.
6. Check on your emergency food supply. Freshen up what you need on your next shopping trip. Include adequate supplies of bottled water, a manual can opener, and food for your pet.
7. Make sure you have adequate prescription medications.CARBON MONOXIDE WARNING: Do not cook with charcoal or use a butane stove in the house. Use them outside. These fuels emit dangerous levels of carbon monoxide when burned.

Vials for Life
Under the "Vials for Life" program elderly people, or anyone else with a medical problem, may keep a summary of their medical history in their refrigerator where the EMTs can get it right away. Each kit includes a plastic bottle and a medical history form for the resident to complete. The kit also includes a magnet to stick on the outside of the refrigerator. The magnet tells the medical personnel the vial is in the refrigerator. The form, which may be filled out by a doctor, lists the patient's illness, medications and next of kin. The person puts a copy of the form in the bottle and places the bottle in the refrigerator. We have a new supply of Vial for Life donated by the Woodbridge Rotary Club so please stop by the Center to pick one up.

Medi$ave
Connecticut has joined the efforts of other states in fighting this fraud and abuse. Throughout the country there are similar programs which deal with this issue under different names.

The Area Agencies on Aging, the Department of Social Services, and numerous other support organizations are participating in the Medi$ave Program to inform and educate beneficiaries on the Medicare/Medicaid program.

Anyone interested in participating in this very worthy project, please call Leslie Pruitt, Med$ave Program Coordinator, from the Area Agency on Aging at (203) 785-8533.

Warm Weather Knowledge
Warmer weather means more time to spend outdoors. Remember, it's now Lyme Disease season. For preventive measures, avoid tick-infested areas and check yourself after coming in from outdoors. If you are interested, the FDA has approved LYMErix, the world's first vaccine for Lyme disease. This disease is a deer tick-borne illness that can cause arthritic and flu-like symptoms preceded in many cases by a wheel-like rash. The injection is administered in three doses and has an 80% effectiveness rate after the full series has been administered. It has been proven to be most effective in people ages 15-70. Some insurance carriers are covering LYMErix and its injections, when administered at a physician's office as a covered service. For more information, call your doctor or the Lyme Disease Foundation at 800-886-5963
